About Doc Marie’s

Established in 2022, Doc Marie’s is named after a pioneer in women’s and workers’ rights here in Portland, OR. Dr. Marie Equi became a doctor in 1903. This homesteading lesbian of the Pacific Northwest went above and beyond the regular call of duty.

She put herself at risk to treat the most vulnerable in the communities around her and stepped up during some of the area’s biggest disasters. Commonly referred to as just “Doc”, Marie Equi was also a well known lesbian, living with a few different longterm female partners over her life.

The role that Dr. Marie Equi played in this community then, is why the bar is named after her now. A sense of pride, support, and safety to an underserved community that needs it most. We embody those values here, in her honor and the honor of every queer person who has come before and since.

The only lesbian bar in all of PDX, Doc Marie’s holds open its doors for everyone. Come see what we are all about.
